SAM.gov registration checklist

Registering in SAM.gov (the System for Award Management) is free and required by law to be free. This checklist covers what to have ready before you start, so you don't hit a validation failure halfway through and have to start over. Your progress is saved on this device as you go.

Why registrations get rejected

Nearly every rejection comes down to one of a small number of causes: the legal name in SAM.gov doesn't exactly match IRS records, the uploaded document doesn't show both the current legal name and physical address together, or the document itself is a poor-quality scan the validation system can't read. Working through this checklist before you start SAM.gov's own form catches most of these in advance.

If you're already stuck

If your registration is showing "Entity Validation Failed" or "No Match Found", the fix is almost always one of the items above, most often the exact-name-match issue. If you've already opened a support ticket and it's been stuck for a while, follow up on that existing ticket rather than opening a second one, since a duplicate ticket just splits your case and slows both down. You can raise an issue directly through fsd.gov with the issue type set to Entity Validation.

What comes after registration

Once you're registered, your business appears in the database contracting officers search to find vendors, and you become eligible to compete for the roughly $160 billion in contracting dollars set aside for small businesses each year.
